Henry (Lester) is growing increasingly disenchanted with politics. His grandfather was the country’s most celebrated Civil Rights leader, and Henry would also like to make history. He is approached by Governor Jack Stanton (Travolta), an unknown southerner who is running for President of the United States.
After Henry watches Stanton handle a tough crowd in Harlem and meets with Susan Stanton (Thompson), the smart, tough wife of the candidate, he signs on. He goes to the capitol of Stanton’s home state and meets his new political family: Richard (Thornton) the wily political strategist who proudly describes himself as a “Redneck,” Libby (Bates) the overtly gay campaign organizer and Daisy (Tierney) the campaign media advisor. Together they run an improbable campaign, jumping over hurdles thrown in by the love life of Stanton and the rising popularity of other candidates.
