Travolta kicked off film festival
Appearing before hundreds of cheering locals hungry for popcorn, chocolate and a creature with a crush on actress Julie Adams, John Travolta and Kelly Preston toasted the inaugural Silver Springs International Film Festival last week in their adopted hometown.
The celebrity couple has lived in Anthony, just north of Ocala, for about 10 years.
They briefly attended the festival’s opening ceremony last Thursday at the Marion Theatre, offering opening remarks before returning home to celebrate the 14th birthday of their daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta.
“Ocala is no stranger to film,” Travolta told the sold-out crowd. “There have been films made here since 1916, some of the greatest, small and big, films. So when Kelly and I started to do our charity premieres here, it felt very natural, very organic. It’s the perfect place for an international film festival.”
The Marion Theatre, in fact, was key to Travolta’s first Ocala film premiere. In 2007, he and Preston hosted a premiere of “Wild Hogs” and a fundraising gala that benefited, among other local causes, renovation efforts for the historic downtown movie house. Travolta and local motorcyclists gathered at the old theater that day before thundering into Regal Hollywood 16 for the movie premiere.
The couple has since held several movie premieres in Ocala that have raised tens of thousands of dollars for local causes.
At Thursday’s opening ceremony, Preston told the crowd that proceeds from the film festival will raise money for scholarships and filmmaking efforts in Marion County schools. As they left the stage to more cheers, several in the audience told them to wish Ella a happy birthday.
The Travoltas opened for “The Creature from the Black Lagoon,” a 1954 movie partially filmed in Silver Springs and shown at the film fest to celebrate — as Travolta noted — Marion County’s film heritage.
