Eddie (Penn) and Maureen (Wright) are young, married, broke, and madly in love. Drunk, Eddie attacks a neighbor who attacked Maureen, and it ends up costing him ten years of his life in a mental institution.

Maureen divorces Eddie and marries Joey (Travolta). Then Eddie shows up again, and insists on coming back into Maureen’s life even if it upsets her present marriage.
